THINGS YOU (PROBABLY) DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT MADRID

Madrid is a vibrant city, full of history, art and life… but it is also full of secret corners and curiosities that many locals don’t even know about. If you want to explore the most unexpected and original side of the capital, here are 10 things you (probably) didn’t know about Madrid!

1. There is an Egyptian temple in the center of the city: the Temple of Debod.

Yes, an authentic temple of ancient Egypt. It was a gift from the Egyptian government to Spain in 1968. It is located near Plaza de España, and watching the sunset there is magical.

Madrid has a secret bunker from the Civil War.

The Bunker of El Capricho Park is one of the best kept secrets. It was used as headquarters of the Republican army and is open to the public with guided tours.

3. Spain’s kilometer zero is at Puerta del Sol.

Just in front of the clock building is a small plaque indicating the point from which all radial roads in Spain are measured. Many people pass by it without knowing it.

4. The ghost subway station: Chamberí

Closed in 1966, today it is a museum called “Platform 0”. You can see what the subway was like decades ago, with old advertisements, original ticket offices and period decorations.

5. The statue of the Devil is in the Retiro

Madrid is home to one of the few statues dedicated to Lucifer in the world: the Fountain of the Fallen Angel, in the Retiro Park, and curiously it is 666 meters above sea level!

6. A house without windows in Malasaña

On San Bernardino street there is a facade with doors… but no windows. It is a construction that has become an urban mystery and a symbol of Madrid’s alternative neighborhood.

7. There is a “Skyline” hidden from the Cerro del Tío Pío.

Known as “the park of the seven tits”, this natural viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular views of Madrid’s skyline, especially at sunset.

8. A watch that tells the time backwards

The main building, holding the regional parliament of the autonomous region of Madrid, in Puerta del Sol

In the Clock Museum (in José Ortega y Gasset street) you can find a clock that rotates in the opposite direction. It was created as a mathematical curiosity and is fascinating to see.

9. A church with a rotating world ball

The Church of San Manuel and San Benito, in front of the Retiro, has a dome where you can see a sphere of the world that rotates with the wind. It is a detail that goes unnoticed by many.
